How the Voices in Your Community Shape Your Life

Uncategorized Jun 09, 2019

We were five hours into the hike up Mt. Elbert, one of Colorado’s famous “fourteeners”, and I was out of breath, out of strength and ready to throw in the towel. (For all my other Midwesty gals, a “Fourteener” is a mountain with a peak greater than 14,000 feet above sea level.) As I rested trail side on the most comforting rock a girl has ever seen, I look to my friend Susan and said, “That’s it. You guys go on. You can get me on the way back down.”

Now, you don’t need a helmet or ropes to climb Mt. Elbert, but it’s not a casual walk in the Appalachian foothills. I’m certainly no mountain climber, but let’s be real here, you can’t go to Colorado without a mountain adventure in mind.

Susan was my college roommate and she has now been a resident of Colorado for more than 10 years. She and her husband Charlie and their two young sons are adventurers. They ski, run, climb...

Building a Life You Don't Need a Vacation From

Uncategorized Jun 09, 2019

I consider myself a territorial person. I’m sensitive to what comes into my home and farm. I need my own space and routine where I can run my day and raise my children how I see best. This is probably my best explanation as to why I live on a farm and homeschool my kids. It provides the best setting for me to be the greatest influence on my children.

I grew up in suburban America doing every activity imaginable. Cheerleading, track and field, gymnastics, ballet, I did it all. For my kids, I’m taking the simplified route.

Daniel thinks he wants them to play lacrosse and football, I’m happy with 4-H and nothing more. Our extended families like to go on long holiday vacations to distant places.

I prefer to stay at home in the special world we are creating on the farm. I hear people say it from time to time: Build a life you don’t need a vacation from. That’s becoming my motto.

My children’s taking to farm life is not...

From City Girl to the Rural Woman Podcast Host: Why Telling Ag Stories Matter

Uncategorized Jun 09, 2019
From Erika: Katelyn, aka wildrosefarmer, is a Canadian hemp farmer with a passion for goats and sharing ag stories through her podcast, The Rural Woman.  I love following her on Instagram and she has featured some of my favorites on her podcast, which you seriously needs to listen to next time you are making a trip to town to grab parts.  Her story inspires me to connect and empower all my fellow women in ag, and I hope she inspires you today too.

Hey there, I'm Katelyn

Thanks to Erika from 4F Farms for asking me to be a part of her blog. I thought I’d start out by telling you a little bit about who I am and where I came from.

I’m a first generation female farmer from Southern Alberta, Canada. I farm alongside my husband, affectionately known as The Farmer, and our crew on our families certified organic grain and oilseed operation. I was born and raised a city kid not knowing a darn thing about agriculture. I met and fell in...

Should I Share About Ag on Social Media?

Uncategorized Jun 09, 2019
From Erika: Ashly was one of my first internet friends in the ag world.  She regularly does Instagram LIVE videos of her dairy operation, which is a great case for transparency and show the consumer that the cattle are not harmed or mistreated while being milked.  She has been an inspiration to me and I asked her, "Why and how should we share about ag on social media?".  Takes notes, because this lady is a boss.  Find her on Instagram and don't forget to hit follow.  Without any further ado, here is Ashly...

When Erika first messaged me about being a guest blogger on her page, my initial reaction was “Of course! That’s awesome!” and then my usual self kicked in. It’s supposed to be 500 words? Man, I’ll never make it. (It’s now 1000 haha) The person who procrastinated on writing the blog about transparency because that’s what I do. I procrastinate and I’m transparent about it…here we are, my two...

A few months ago, I was tweaking some of the settings on my iPhone—turning off a few annoying notifications, deleting some apps that were taking up way too much space. In the process of going through my settings, I discovered a new feature on my iPhone: Screentime.

Many of you are probably familiar with this feature, but if you’re not it’s an interesting little peek into...

Failing On Purpose

Uncategorized Jun 09, 2019

From Erika: Charlotte Smith is the creator of 3 Cow Marketing and an expert on selling your family farm's products, especially online.  She has free trainings on her website, offers courses and teaches all over North America.  She is an incredible resource and treasure trove of information.  If you direct market anything off of your farm, you should definitely be in touch with Charlotte.  You can (and should) find her on Instagram or Facebook.  We are so blessed to have her guest blogging for us today and I couldn't agree more with what she has to say.

Why I’m failing on purpose this year.

This year I've committed to failing on purpose 100 times in order to reach a super big goal I set, doubling my income in 2019.

This may sound odd to you, but I can tell you, learning to fail, and be okay with failure, has changed me forever - for the good, of course!

There is so much information out there on how not to fail - but...

Superwoman, Chill Your Britches

Uncategorized Jun 09, 2019
From Erika: Lyndsey is one of the VERY BEST photographers for weddings, couples, and ranch life in general.  The girl has an Instagram that is to die for, and has recently gone very public about hustling after her goals and maintaining her balance as a wife and mama.  She decided to cut back on her successful photography business (just a little) to focus on the most important things at home.  I couldn't relate more to her in that way, and when I reached out to see if she had any blog posts that might serve my audience, she pointed towards this one and I fell in love at first read.  I know that everyone who follows me will love Lyndsey and this article especially.  You can find her own website at lyndseygarber.com or check your her Instagram pictures by clicking here.  Enjoy this spunky take on productivity in motherhood on the farm/ranch by Lyndsey Garber.

I’m writing this not from a position of having figured this out. I’m not...

Farmlife Ain't Gonna Get Easier

Uncategorized Jun 09, 2019

Note from Erika: Asia is the farming mama behind the Instagram account @aina_company.  Not only does she have a beautiful farming family, but they live in the great state of Hawaii.  I would be lying if I didn't admit to just a little bit of jealousy while watching her hilarious and gorgeous Insta-stories over this rough winter in Kansas!  She is always making me laugh, and does a great job of sharing her real life with her customers who purchase their food from a local farmers market in Hawaii.  I reached out to her with the same question I ask all my guestbloggers.  "What is one piece of advice for the farm mom who is too, too busy???"  Her response was on point for her character: hilarious, insightful and 100% accurate.  She responded in video so I've typed up a transcript below (its not quite word for word, but almost).  Hope you enjoy her energy and feel as prepared to take on the waves today as I do!  Watch below and/or read...

How I Get It All Done

Uncategorized Jun 09, 2019
From Erika: Today I have the pleasure of sharing a blog post from someone I have long admired.  Terryn has been published in magazines like Working Ranch and BEEF magazine.  She was also honored as the 2018 Beef Advocate of the Year by the National Cattemen's Beef Association.  As you'll see from her writing, she is just like the rest of us, but I just had to ask how this mother of three littles (who is very involved in the ranch work) has time for building her online presence and career as an photographer, writer, and advocate for beef.  Here's what she had to say...

Hello! I’m Terryn – the wife, mother, food safety enthusiast, Stormy Kromer fanatic who has slightly (okay, a lot) random tendencies, dabbles in photography, and shares maybe a little too much.

You can find my own blog here or my day-to-day ranch life on Instagram @faithfamilyandbeef if you’re looking for honest answers (sprinkled with humor + inspiration) to...

Too Busy Is A Lie with Jen Stutzman from Heart of The Bison

Note from Erika: Y'all, I hope you read this slowly and really take it all in.  Jen speaks Truth into the heart of this weary mama, and I know that her words will touch your heart as well.  You can find more of her wisdom via her instagram page or her amazing podcast.

Meet Jen Stutzman

Hey everyone!, my name is Jen Stutzman and I am so excited and honored to meet with you here. Guys, I am broken Christian in a need of Jesus every second of every single day.  I am 37 and learning to rest in the love of God with every passing year. My hope is that these words will encourage you to the heart of God.

I want to write about a huge lie that so many of us believe that has us held captive to our busy days.  The lie is, "I don't have time to do everything I'm supposed to do." I can't even tell you guys the amount of times I have thought this and said these very...
